As Christiaan Huygens’ invention of the balance spring transformed the watch into an instrument of precision, from 1675 the watchmaking production was limited to three European countries. While England dominated by producing in quantity and quality; France, after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, produced little but evidently aimed at high end products.
