The portrait-miniature, 1635 to 1760 "Petitot and Bordier open the series of true Geneva artists,” wrote Rigaud in 1845. In a short space of time Petitot, followed by the painter Jean-Etienne Liotard, gave Geneva the reputation of unequalled capital of craftsmanship in Europe. Jean Petitot was the son of Protestant refugees, and probably studied painting on enamel with its creator, Jean Toutin, around 1635.
